Essential oils are made by steaming or cold pressing raw plant material, essential oils are the distilled liquid essence of a plant. From tea tree to ginger and grapefruit to vanilla, you can find most any plant or herb in an aromatic essential oil form.

These concentrated liquids can do more than just make your cleaning products smell fabulous. They can disinfect, purify and even remove stains — all without any toxic chemicals in the mix. Essential oils are naturally antimicrobial and antibacterial.

Another important functional group found in different essential oils is alcohol group (hydroxyl group). Natural alcohols kill bacteria by breaking down their membrane. The most common alcohols found in essential oils are linalool, menthol, geraniol, and santalol. Sandalwood essential oil, for instance, contains 90% of santalol.

Vinegar is an antibacterial agent that kills 99 percent of bacteria. It's also nontoxic, nonpolluting and edible. Acetic acid (a.k.a. white vinegar) is a great disinfectant. It also acts as a deodorizer and cuts grease. You can tackle salmonella, E. coli and other “gram-negative” bacteria with vinegar. Gram-negative bacteria can cause pneumonia, meningitis and bloodstream, wound or surgical site infections. The strong smell of vinegar will dissipate quickly, leaving your hands clean and soft lingering smells of the essential oils.

Lavender Essential Oil has tremendous antibacterial and deodorising properties, even against bacteria within the Streptococcus species. Research suggests that lavender can kill bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other sources of infections. It may also act as an antioxidant.

Lemon Essential Oil is a widely used natural remedy known for its disinfectant attributes. Limonene and b-pinene are two main components that give this volatile oil its antimicrobial properties. Lemon oil is one of several essential oils that can kill harmful bacteria that can grow on your skin. Lemon essential oil was shown to be effective against strains of bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli. This makes a good choice for cleaning small wounds

Tea Tree Essential Oil: This is a powerful, anti-septic immune system stimulant that is beneficial for eliminating bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It can treat wounds, provide soothing relief for aches, pains, and congestion, promote a sense of calm, and disinfect surfaces.

Sandalwood Essential Oil has a classic scent and best known for its antiseptic and disinfectant properties. It can be used as an antiseptic, anti inflammatory, antiphlogistic, antispasmodic, and an astringent. In addition to that, it also has cicatrizant, carminative, diuretic, disinfectant, emollient, expectorant, and hypotensive properties.
